Workout at Home
To work out at home, you need a plan. In the First Step of a Home Workout, we discussed making a goal map as an outline for your workout. In the second step of your Home Workout, I will give you a pdf that you can print and customize for yourself. Most of the time, dancers hear their teachers give them “corrections” as we call it in ballet. Corrections are meant as input for improvement and not as a personal criticism. My advice~ don’t worry about getting corrections. Be concerned if you are not!
…and if you do not understand what they mean by their correction, please ask!
The “How to”
The second important words to listen to from your teacher are the “how to” of accomplishing a skill. The skill could be a step, musicality, or a basic element such as turnout or stretch. Write these down too.

Listen to the Praise
The last thing to note is when you are given praise. Take it in. Teachers mean what they say and you need that positive encouragement which is always given less than the corrections. If you did it right, make note of what you did that was successful. Maybe you kept your head level in a pirouette or worked without tension.
Dance is complex and we often forget!
Don't let this happen to you! 'Come on, don't give me the same correction again' Make changes and figure it out. You can do it.Click To Tweet
Teachers and students alike, do not enjoy giving or receiving the same notes year after year. That means that something is wrong. Look at those possibilities and make a pledge to look at the possible reasons. Could your attendance be inconsistent? Are you not doing enough core work? Do you feel stale in your dancing?
